Don’t let the apparent lack of length of New Mexico Tech fool you. This course, built in a Midwestern parkland style at 4,800 feet above sea level, features small, elevated greens and plenty of water hazards. There are mature trees to stymie the spray hitter and plenty of ups and downs, but not so many that you can’t walk comfortably. The Tech course is home to the Socorro Open each June. Past competitors include PGA Tour pros Lee Trevino, Paul Stankowski, Notah Begay III and Rich Beem. The small greens, tree-lined fairways and deftly placed water hazards make New Mexico Tech, designed by a former president of the university, a challenge for players of all abilities. 80 miles south of the Albuquerque airport.
